So at a later stage EA chose to address this error by giving every player a free TOTY Messi item, meaning that no player benefited from this error and no player lost anything from it. Another way to solve this problem in the meantime is to re-release the same player picks at the same odds for players who originally didn't complete. In this way, players still have a good chance of packing TOTY Messi, which is fair to every player who missed out on SBC.
As ridiculous as it sounds, EA may act like this was never an issue. The publisher has never addressed what the issue with player selection is, but there appears to be another bug in the description of player selection. The TOTY player selection was supposed to only include leagues that featured players included in TOTY, but the Serie A Women's League was incorrectly named in the selected league list, even though no players from that league appear on any TOTY teams.
